2026 CONFERENCE THEME

CPTED: Improving the Quality of Life Through Design

In 1996, The International CPTED Association held its first conference in Calgary. Thirty years later, we return home.

The 2026 conference on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design themed CPTED: Improving the Quality of Life Through Design, focuses on community building, empowerment, and stronger collaboration with government partners. As a training conference, it offers practical opportunities to learn new skills and build CPTED competencies within the ICA certification program. Delegates will deepen their understanding of CPTED, share experiences, and explore effective ways to apply CPTED in creating safer and more livable communities.

Why Attend?

  • Share applied CPTED experiences from Canada, the United States, and beyond
  • Participate in hands-on practicums, site visits, and design charrettes
  • Learn how CPTED is being codified, legislated, and evaluated
  • Explore emerging topics, including Artificial Intelligence and CPTED
  • Build professional connections across disciplines and borders

This conference emphasizes real-world application, skill development, and practical learning that participants can take back to their own communities.

Our conference theme is about making a positive difference in the built environment in these divergent times. We will feature practicums and hands-on training on setting up and implementing CPTED programs and their evaluation. This will be a priceless experience of participating in the Jane Jacobs walk around Calgary, discussion of the role of AI in CPTED, the codification and legislation of CPTED, and enhanced skills training.

This unique, world-class event will also feature training sessions with site visits to downtown Calgary applications of CPTED, followed by experiential design sessions with some of the world’s top CPTED architects, and urban designers.

You will have opportunities to meet CPTED advocates and practitioners from all over the world, including community organizers, criminologists, police, security directors, business people, architects, planners, civic politicians, researchers, academics, and many others.

For 30 years, the International CPTED Association (ICA), the umbrella organization with which CPTED-PCAM Canada and CPTED USA chapters are affiliated with, has led new developments in CPTED including design guidebooks, webinars, developing new CPTED standards, and CPTED certification. The conference will also feature training sessions on how to become CPTED certified and how to access accredited courses.
